It's important to be aware of the different benefits and tax credits there are available so you know you're not missing out on anything you shouldn't be. Grab a pen and paper. Try and list as many different types of benefits someone might receive as you can. When you've done that, you can look through the GOV.UK website and see if you can find out about any you missed off your list.
Task 2: What Are You Entitled To?

Child Benefit payments are available for all those responsible for a child under the age of 16 and, in some cases, up to age 20. Only one person can claim per child - you can find out more from GOV.UK.
Working Tax Credits
Working Tax Credits offer a little extra support to make sure you're better off in work than out of it. Check the tax credit calculator below to work out how much you could get. Then go to the GOV.UK page for details of how to claim:
Child Tax Credits
Child Tax Credits support those on a low income with children. This can be claimed in addition to Child Benefit and you don't have to be working to qualify. The links below will take you to two different parts of the GOV.UK website - one to check if you qualify for tax credits, and one to find out how to claim them.
Universal Credit is a single payment that is replacing six current benefits and tax credits. On the Public Services Online page, you'll find a handy guide that explains what Universal Credit is, who it will affect and how you can claim it if you need to.
The Job Hunting Online section has a course about job hunting online, as well as a guide about Universal Jobmatch that will help you use the Universal Jobmatch website in the most effective way you can.
